Which Is Better, Brass or Stainless Steel Quick Couplers?

Couplers commonly come in 2 options- stainless steel and brass. Stainless steel is preferred by most users as it boasts excellent chemical resistance and durability. It lasts much longer and is less prone to corrosion compared to brass, which can wear out faster and become challenging to connect and disconnect over time.

Stainless steel is also a bit lighter, but keep in mind, these benefits come at an additional cost. Stainless steel couplers can be a bit more expensive than the cost of their brass counterparts. Ultimately, whether the extra cost is worth it is up to you, but we find that most pros go with stainless steel for its durability and longer life.


What is the Best O-Ring Material for Pressure Washer Couplers?

O-rings serve an important role- keeping a reliable seal in high-pressure and high-temperature conditions.

 

3 of the most common O-ring materials are: EPDM, Viton, and Buna.


Buna, also known as nitrile rubber, is the most common due to its low cost and ability to handle high pressures, oils, and acids. It performs well in commercial applications and can handle up to 210 degrees Fahrenheit.

Buna will be fine for most users…  but what if you are running chemicals or high temperatures?

EPDM, also known as Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer, is known for its wide operational temperature range and is chemically resistant. EPDM is rated to handle temps as high as 280 degrees, while also being particularly resistant to cold temperatures, withstanding as low as -45 degrees Fahrenheit before becoming brittle.

Lastly, Viton, though it is the most expensive of the three, is the best choice for high-temperature applications, rated to withstand up to 300 degrees Fahrenheit. Viton also is popular for its ability to resist degradation and corrosion from chemicals and acids, meaning this material will keep a quality seal for a long time, no matter your application.  


What Size Quick Coupler is Best for My Needs?

It is important to make sure the coupler you purchase is the right size for your application. The right fit will depend on your hose and machine, so be careful to take good measurements before purchasing. Commonly used sizes in the pressure washer industry are ¼” for nozzles and wand accessories, and 3/8” for connecting the hose, trigger gun, and pressure washer.

Another variation of the ball-bearing QC coupler is the Twist Connect, or M22. As you might expect, these twist together, with the female side twisting onto the male end. Typically only available in Brass, the female end of these twist connects has an o-ring inside that creates its tight seal. Many consumer-grade and European-manufactured pressure washers use twist-type connections.
